Week 01 - Introduction to Digital Photography & Imaging

LECTURE

Mr. Fauzi gave us an overview of what to expect for this module and its projects in the coming weeks. He repeatedly advised us that it's important for us to organise our files properly because we will have countless amount of files with final, final.final version of every design work. So, it's important for us to be disciplined with our time and organisation skills. We were also asked to play the Bezier Pen Tool Game and attach the result at the end of the day because he would like to assess our skills in the Pen Tool for Adobe platforms roughly.

Some of the things that were mentioned on the importance of Photoshop in the industry is that it is one of the highly used software for Graphic Designing. Refining old images, and creative projects such as surrealism projects, you can imagine how you would want to edit your photo and that is almost possible to be done in Adobe Photoshop.

TUTORIAL

We were told to watch a video made by our lecturer on Composition Studies for us to prepare visually and artistically for our Digital and Physical Collage Design.

PRACTICAL

We were instructed to create our own Pinterest account or make use of our existing ones to find visual references on how we wanted to go about our first project. Besides that, we also created our Blogger account for the E-Portfolio for us to document our progress throughout the semester of our degree.

We are also required to choose 3 visual designs from interest and provide a description on why that particular piece resonates with you.

Design #1

Figure 1.2 - Artwork #1

Description: When I stumbled across this piece of art that I found on Pinterest, my thoughts instantly went to a darker place that reminded me of the world we live in right now. Despite governance all over the world, conflicts still happen and in some countries, it has been a place of War for as long as you can remember. The pair of hands visually "cutting" the stem of the mushroom cloud is showing us that the stopping of war or conflicts is in the hands of us humans. The powerful leaders have the say in the status of the world in regards to peace and safety, if greed weren't the case, we wouldn't see the conflicts and neocolonialism that have been happening to the world we live in now.

Design #2

Figure 1.2 - Artwork #2

Description: This is a very dark surrealist art piece that I resonated with the most. The way this piece portrays a presumably lonely figure sitting across a window in a very dimmed room with the railing of masks that shows different 'emotions' and which to choose for the day. I liked this piece because coming into the world from the perspective of being a tertiary student, I feel like this is the period of time where I feel the most genuine. Society has the impression that the 'real world' is when you start your working-life journey, but for me, it's the opposite. Your life during tertiary education is when your time to speak your truths and attend to your curiosities to understand the world better. We most definitely can't be this 100% attentive to our emotions and feelings when it comes to the working world where professionalism and expectations to put your personal affairs aside are highly expected. I feel like the masks are collected feelings of our past experiences with those emotions attached to them and when it's time to use the mask, we are reminded of the experience and to be in the moment with the aid of our 'masks' to push through the day.

Design #3

Figure 1.3: Artwork #3 and #4

Description: The piece on the left is the original third design that I went with but due to the poor quality, I inserted another design alongside the original option because both gave me the same thoughts and insights that strongly evident my liking for these pieces. The concept of 'finding our way back to our inner child' is not a foreign thing, at least to me. Whenever life gets a little too hard on us, we tend to make use of our coping mechanism by going to 'places' that are not foreign and that we are comfortable with to help us self-regulate our emotions back to place. The piece on the left shows a white figure (that is the inner child self) and the black figure (that resembles our current self) tightly hugging the black figure to symbolise that our inner child self is always going to be there for us no matter how hard life gets. It also reminds us that obstacles are meant to be faced for us to continue growing in life. The piece on the right however shows a similar meaning but is presented in a way that we 'go back' to our mind to meet our child-self for the same thoughts explained in the piece on the left.
