Week 11 - Week 14: Project 4: Self-Titled

LECTURE

In the span of these last few weeks, we are required to follow a pre-made timeline by Sir Fauzi provided to us in Google Classroom to ensure that we could use it as a checkpoint to keep the progression in check for the final submission. He also conducted multiple consultations for Project 4 such as our sketches, posters, animation ideas, etc.

TUTORIAL

Sir Fauzi hoped that our animation outcome is a reflection of our own personal interest/hobby rather than an aesthetically pleasing but meaningless design work. We are required to document our ideas and statements in the provided Google Slides document for this project.

PRACTICAL

Part 1: Week 10 - Idea Development:

Biography - My name is Ahmad Firas, I have lived for 2 decades and I am looking forward to many more decades of life to explore and experience.  Before this, I was a student in the Science Stream. I took Foundation in Science for my Pre-University with the intention to enroll myself in the Medicine course to be a doctor here in Malaysia. However, that ship has sailed due to recurring issues here in Malaysia with the demonstration on Contract Doctors the other day. That was the last reason that made me go into my line of hobbies to make it a career instead. That is how my story as a Pre-Med student ended and now on the path to be a person in the creative industry. Now, let’s talk about my hobbies. Hobbies come and go just like our friends in life but my current obsession is over TV shows, movies and also books. I usually spend my free time doing either of these hobbies or all three in a span of the day. Immersing myself in these mediums is my own version of daydreaming, imagining myself as one of the characters in a book that I was reading or thinking about what I might’ve contributed if I were to be one of the characters in a movie or tv show that I was watching. Those are my hobbies.
After talking about my hobbies and career path, I’ll still consider myself as a work-in-progress because that is the reality of life. People come and go, hobbies come and go, and our dreams come and go. It is up to us how to navigate ourselves to the ever-changing life experiences to continue to believe that our fate is sealed and to never be afraid to take risks in life.

Statement (Work) -  I’d prefer something simple-looking projects, something that resonates with calmness and serenity. To have balanced and strategically placed images/elements in my poster/animation is the goal. To have an emphasis on the double exposure self-portrait in the middle too. I feel like adding natural elements would be best to project those feelings mentioned above. As a fan of the show Avatar: The Legend of Aang, I have always felt like if I were to have an elemental power, it would be water or earth. I could say that my personality is more fluid-like. I could be as calm as water or as firm as ice. Also, I feel like earth elemental power means you build yourself up from the ground. I would say the traits of an earthbender such as being dependable, helpful, and driven are those in-line with myself too. Next, being able to appreciate Nature for lending us its energy and sources is always at the back of my mind. So, watching a show like The 100, a dystopian-post-apocalypse setting show with characters struggling to survive in what is once called home, the Earth makes me more loving towards Nature and have a sense of duty towards preserving mother nature of what’s left.
A work that is nature-centric while maintaining an emphasis on the self-portrait in double exposure as the focal point of the animation and poster.

Part 4: Week 14 - Final Submission:

Title: The Forest Watcher

Statement: This 15-second animation is created with such elements to portray the forest ambience. The reason for it being that way is that I was mainly inspired by my visual research images that were found to be using natural elements to create their surreal art projects. Also, I was inspired by the show The 100, a dystopian show where the early seasons were a bunch of people trying to survive in a now-ruined Earth caused by biowarfare. The Sun is a symbol that even in the darkness of times, the Sun will still be shining down upon you.
