Week 02 - Introduction to Composition
LECTURE
The composition basics that we've focused on today were Focal Point, Scale and
Hierarchy, Rule of Thirds, The Golden Ration, Framing, and Cropping.
He elaborated on the importance to have a focal point that will instantly grab
the attention of viewers of your design work, if something were to have
multiple objects but one of which is the main objective of the design, this is
where Scale and Hierarchy come to play because it provides viewers with the
virtual visual hierarchy on which element may be more important to have a more
enriching interpretation session.
Also to put in mind is the balancing of your overall composition and not being
afraid to have white space all around. Novice designers might think that
filling up every space available is the way to go but eventually, it is almost
better to always leave a tremendous amount of white space accordingly because
that leaves the centre of attention to the subject in the frame of the
composition. This provides emphasis/focal point.

Another method of ensuring that we have everything in place is to play with
the Rule of Thirds grid and also the Golden Ratio because these are somehow
proven to be composition techniques that naturally grab the attention of
viewers and there's a visual movement on the placement of elements that
complements the hierarchy. Golden Ratio is initially from the mathematicians.
They said that a ratio of numbers between 1 to 1.618 is the golden ratio and
when it comes to art, it seems to be true. It's been used in this industry to
achieve balance, and harmony to achieve visually pleasing designs.
TUTORIAL
This week's tutorial is an extension of last week's tutorial but this time
around we are already attempting our multiple-composition layout for our
physical collage design.
PRACTICAL
We were instructed to start on our composition arrangements and compare them
side by side and make mental notes on which works and which doesn't base on
our present knowledge of design. Documentation of these trial rounds is
recommended.
Pre-Composition #1
The first composition I did was a rather messy one because I couldn't get
any vision to follow along the way. Which of the pieces to remove or which
to rearrange to ensure that there is a flow presence in my collage to follow
my interpretation accordingly.
Pre-Composition #2
The second attempt is to realise that I want less text on the collage
project and remove those large unnecessary backgrounds to create some
sense of balance and space in the piece and to put the emphasis (focal
point) on the two figures as my main story and part of the composition.
Pre-Composition #3
This is my final arrangement and composition for the collage piece after
removing more articles and more background pictures that aren't really
fitting to the story that I'm trying to achieve. I've tried with my
phone's camera grid to see where this collage stands with the rule of
thirds, the four intersecting points fit my storyline and the flow of it
by capturing the viewer's eyes to the main title on the first intersection
point on the top left and followed by the intersection point on the bottom
left as the second point of view.

| Figure 2.4 - Pre-Composition #3 (Physical) |
Concept: The idea started when I was listening to Everybody Dies by
Billie Eilish. She highlighted that
"It's just a lot to think about the world I'm used to,
The one I can't get back, at least not for a while,
I sure have a knack for seeing life more like a child."
So I came up with the idea to highlight that in today's world, we can see
people, especially on social media where there's an obvious presence and
pressure that the only way to stay relevant in today's society is by
thinking that it's a must for them to have these beautifully curated
contents like pictures, videos, Instagram stories and so on, on their
feeds. It's almost like a competition and that 'crown' collage above those
two figures represents this idea.
It's a horrendous ideology that is creating this disparity among those who
are and aren't active on social media.
However, at the end of the day, it all comes down to your value as a
person and how you bring yourself together against any challenges and
obstacles that we face in this world. To end this collage is by having the
idea that at the end of the day "Everybody Dies" and that's the definite
ending chapter for anyone in this world regardless of who or what status
you hold in the physical world before you die (epilogue).
