INSTRUCTIONS

LECTURES

Week 01: Module Briefing and Introduction

Week 01:  Game Development, Exercise & Project

Week 02: Introduction to Basic Game Knowledge

Week 03: Play Week - Digital & Non-Digital Game

This week, my group mates and I went to a board game cafe to have a hands-on experience for our game ideation development for the final project.

Week 04: Games Dimensionality

Week 05: Online Presentation for Project 01: Tabletop Game Proposal

Week 06 - Pre-Alpha Test

No lectures were conducted as we were tasked to prepare for our Alpha Playtest that will be happening in Week 07. My groupmates and I are finishing up on the board game pieces that we have created and we had a round of the gameplay to test it out ourselves.

Week 07 - Alpha Playtest

We are required to play the game with 3 new players (from other groups) with 2 of our own group members staying to be the observers who will only observe for feedback and the gameplay without having to play the game with the rest and a game guide that will be playing with the new players as well as guiding them along the way.

I was the game guide and I had to explain to the new players the rules and answer several questions from the players before we started with the gameplay.

EXERCISES

Exercise 01: Personal Gaming Experience

Use our knowledge in reporting our observations and analytical skills to different aspects of digital gaming. The outcome of the growth of this knowledge will contribute to the creation of our group project.

The review will be presented with my findings from the perspective of a player and designer in a video presentation format and separate physical presentation slides will be attached below:

Exercise 02: Non-Digital to Digital - Evolution and Remediating this Game

We are required to identify a non-digital game which has been converted into a digital version. These 3 outlines were given as a guideline on what the video presentation's content should have:

1. Brief explanation of the gameplay.
2. Differences and similarities of play dimension (real life and on-screen)
3. Benefits and disadvantages of three-dimensional:

REFLECTION

After I've reviewed my gaming experiences on the game that I've chosen for each of the exercises. I definitely could feel more aware of the intricacies of the games in terms of how different gaming dimensionality affects the gameplay. Some people would prefer to be more social by playing the physical game board version where you are required to interact with other players, whereas at times, you just want to sit back and relax and just play the game with AI players or even real-time players online where you don't require to verbally talk with the players and instead just play the game as it goes. Personally, these exercises also have helped me to progress the ideation for my group project. Since, Cluedo is one of my favourite board games, noting that I don't use this particular game as the literal inspiration for the group project, I took inspiration in the sense of the gaming experience and the flow of board games that I've played. To also make sure that the rules could answer every loophole if any that arose during my group's board game is the goal here when I was progressing with the board game ideas before the alpha playtest. Overall, it has been a fruitful experience getting to know how to look at games in a designer's sense, so that I was able to create a better gaming experience and also excel exponentially in my project and its future requirements. Moreover, by looking at games critically, I was able to take note of the mental processes that I'd gone through to find any benefits, disadvantages, and other minor elements that would be super impactful to a particular game.
