Project 01: Tabletop Game Proposal

INSTRUCTIONS

REQUIREMENTS

- Propose a board game/tabletop game system/framework with a visual theme which may be related to a narrative or genre.
- Identify research problems and questions.
- Hypothesise possible gameplay solutions/ideas during playtime.

PROJECT 01: TABLETOP GAME PROPOSAL

We must brainstorm ideas and overcome obstacles to create our own tabletop game. These points were given to us as a guideline in kickstarting our tabletop game.

- Game Equation: Choosing three references that could be used as an inspiration for you to make you derive your own game concept.
- Playful Experiences: The emotions and environment you want to create with your game. This may aid us in further narrowing our design concept.

Week 01 - Week 04: Ideation and Development

Although these first four weeks are meant for the exercises that we have to complete as an introduction for this Games Studies module, we also have to kickstart our final project starting with developing our tabletop game ideation and finalising the proposal before Week 06, which would be the Pre-Alpha playtest.

Instead of coming up with multiple game ideas for the final project, we approached it in a sense where we knew how we wanted the game experiences would be as taught from one of our lectures, and also taking inspiration from our game references and integrating them to be our own game.

Rough Idea [Final Project]

Week 03 - Week 04: Play Week (No physical class) and Finalising our game proposal

For this particular week 03, we were advised to visit a board game cafe and play out different games that would fit the vibe of what you're aiming for our final project. This is when we tested the game Trials By Trolley. I'd say that this game was the centre inspiration among other board games that were used as the inspiration. We have also consulted our lecturer, Miss Anis for her feedback on our ideation. She was pleased to know of our idea but also recommended we not go too broad of an idea to avoid losing the specific genre that we were aiming for. "If the game is a party game inspired, but also safe to play for kids, how would we approach that?" This was also the main question given that keeps the ball rolling within our group to have our finalised proposal ready.

Moving on the the following week, we sort of have an idea of how the game goes, as attached by the Apple Note above. We had brainstormed as a group for our action cards which were the heart of the gameplay. Apple Note attached below will be the ideas jotted down.

Action Cards Ideation

*We have created a Miro Board as well, however, due to it being a similar content as the two Apple Notes I've attached I decided not to put it in. As for the mood board/inspiration, they are all attached in the proposal presentation slides below.

The presentation slides attached below will be the finalised proposal, Inside the proposal, here are the things you could find in the content of the slides; This slide is also used as a submission to Project 01 as instructed by our lecturer.

- Game Title
- Brief description of the game
- Intended playful experiences
- Gameplay rules and basic instructions
- References of existing game
- Rough sketches of boards, assets, etc.

REFLECTION

I'm so glad to be having this module at some point in my degree because it is really refreshing to just have a really relaxed module but at the same time a lot of learning lessons learned from the experiences along the way. This is what design schools should strive for because stressful environments are just not going to help us design students to progress due to restrained and exhausted creative juices along the way. From the perspective of the ideation development, I am glad that my team members were able to communicate well about their needs because finding a middle ground with our own tastes in the game genre, can be really taxing at times. However, we managed to pull through it and move forward with the project.
