REFLECTION

Experience

The learning curve for Typography is necessarily steep. There are many rules and principles for you to learn and apply before venturing into something more abstract. It is also a time-consuming module because you have to spend a decent amount of hours understanding what you're doing and getting it done accordingly. In the end, despite hardships, creating your own type design really opened your eyes to the world of typography. You began to appreciate this genre of art a little more and how it actually plays a very important world in the art industry, especially in visual communication.

Observations

Something that I observed in their technicalities of typography, you have to really pay attention to the nuances such as the curves, and the occupied space in between certain lines, these vary but they make the overall typefaces. Abiding by the principles determines the cohesiveness of the letterforms in the type design. Now, I feel like whenever I take a look at posters or billiards, I quickly notice things like kerning, leading, etc.

Findings

When we finished the module, I find that it's really important for someone to learn the basics and get acquainted with the principles before trying to break the rules to make your own typeface designs. Typography is much more than just making fonts and using them digitally or printing them on a physical medium. It is a component of bigger art genres out there. For example, no matter how good your poster or billboards are but with bad typeface design, everything will fall apart. It teaches us how to be more critical when doing art designs not only limited to typography projects/designs.
